Abstract

The architectural heritage of Úbeda (Jaén) has been the subject of numerous interventions throughout the 20^th.-21^th. centuries, especially highlighting the actuation carried out by the architects of the General Directorate of Fine Arts (Ministry of Culture) and the Council of Culture and Historical Heritage of Junta de Andalucía.

With this text we try to delve into the first interventions carried out in the city at the beginning of the 20^th. century, analyzing the projects of architects such Antonio Flórez Urdapilleta, Luís Berges Martínez or Leopoldo Torres Balbás, who would act in monuments like as the Hospital de Santiago or the Church of Santa María de los Reales Alcázares. In the same way, will be analyzed some of the measures proposed at this time aimed at combating the plundering and destruction of historical heritage.

Author Biography

José Manuel Almansa Moreno, University of Jaen

Doctor in Art History from the Pablo de Olavide University, Seville (2006), he is currently Professor of Art History in the Department of Historical Heritage at the University of Jaén (where he has been working since 2007) and his research focuses on the field of mural painting in the Modern Age between Andalusia and Latin America, as well as on monumental restoration and contemporary art in Jaén.
