Without a doubt, the most daring self-referential discourses in museums, as in lit-erature, have been especially fostered since postmodernism, when the self-complacent modern teleological story was questioned by the addicts of ‘critical museology.’ Since then, contemporary art museums have proliferated like never before, cultivating this type of reflection not only in temporary exhibitions, but also increasingly in permanent spaces dedicated to reconsider their past. This is a current trend in which two spatial typologies can be distinguished, analysed here through numerous examples, from which good museographical practices can be further expanded.
